I’m Nathan Heddle, an experienced History and Politics teacher with more than 25 years’ experience in secondary education in the UK.
Originally from Australia, I began my career in education with a strong belief that good teaching is about much more than simply passing on knowledge. It is about encouraging students to be curious, helping them to think independently and giving them the confidence to express their ideas clearly. Over the course of my career, I have had the opportunity to work with students of a wide range of ages, abilities and backgrounds, both in the classroom and in leadership roles.
My specialist subjects are History and Politics, and I have taught extensively at both GCSE and A-Level. I have also held senior leadership responsibilities, including working as an Assistant Headteacher and Head of Department, giving me a broad understanding of curriculum development, assessment, examination requirements and what helps students make real academic progress. With a background in examining at GCSE and A-level, in both History and Politics, I've the experience in what the exam boards want to ensure student success.
After many years in school leadership, I have chosen to place a greater emphasis on what I enjoy most about education: teaching, working directly with students and helping individuals reach their potential. I particularly enjoy the one-to-one nature of tutoring, where lessons can be shaped around the student rather than a whole class.
Outside education, I enjoy reading, travelling, visiting galleries and museums, and hiking. These interests have also helped to maintain my enthusiasm for History and Politics and, importantly, my belief that learning should extend beyond the classroom.
For me, the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing a student develop confidence — whether that is finally understanding a difficult historical topic, learning how to structure a strong essay or beginning to believe that they can achieve a higher grade than they thought possible.
My approach is straightforward: understand the student, identify what they need, and work with them to achieve it.
